Green Urban Life
Urban Jungle - from public square to expansive urban jungle
When we think about the cities of the coming years, squares will undoubtedly be the urban spaces that will most visibly change our lifestyles, transforming from historic gathering places and venues for public events into arid, climatically unsustainable areas. Squares will be the first victims of climate change in urban environments. Historically built with impermeable paving and minimal greenery, heat islands in these empty spaces will record extremely high temperatures. For this reason, squares should undergo a transformation and become the protagonists of urban regeneration, of a new, sustainable, and truly contemporary city. A new model of the square needs to be developed: from an empty space to a dense space. A perennial forest, a new place for urban forestry, diffused and controlled, with services for the city and redesigned to promote future socialization. If we want a resilient and sustainable city, it is essential that nature reclaims the spaces from which it has been removed. Unfortunately, trees are still often seen as mere decorative urban elements to be added after the project is completed. The paradigm needs to be overturned, or sustainable development will be irreversibly lost.
